Beautiful Extreme
Published: May 7, 2008
Saturday was extreme. It was quite a random thought that we ended up at East Coast Park cycling. As usual, trying to challenge oneself, we rode our way towards Changi Beach; almost there but not there yet, time doesn't permit.

The peaceful path to heaven.

I love the airport especially when I captured it with sunset.

All of us were famished after the ride. We went Geylang Wan Tou Sei for dinner. Really good food I must say but 5 of us ordered too much. Our stomach were filled with dim sum at the end of the meal.

The day didn't end so. Ms Danana suggested to go for some fruits. I was like HELP, I can't eat anymore. Still, we ordered some mangosteen, mangoes and apples. And... One Golden Durian.

$16 for the mangoes, mangosteen and apples. It was really tasty.

Mr Golden Durian - King of Fruits cost us $45!!! The blur us know nuts about choosing fruits,
therefore we ended up getting a REAL EXPENSIVE durian.

I missed the one last year and went to Japan. Hee.

"DESARU, compared to Bangkok, it sounds like some paradise." my colleague, Soon Kin, a Mauritian mentioned.

Half an hour boat ride, a little excitement; at least I am out of Singapore.

The sun shines on the 4 ladies. Say cheese.

From Moscow to Desaru, seducing people all the way.

Like a big boss.

Some Hawaii gal.

Tenny, how come I can't see your eyes!?

Twin sisters - Mommy and Viv.

Here we are, in a paradise so to speak.

Lunch time. I thought I was in some orientation camp. The person sitting beside or in front of me must not be in the same dept nor the one sharing the same room.

Soon Kin, Vivian, Colin, Ivy.

Sulaiman, Ming Yen, Edwin.

Asrik, me, Karen, Ling, JY, Florence, Tony.

Tee Tong, Tenny, Razali, Von.

But after all, a paradise doesn’t mean having a strategic meeting all day long.

The man of authority - GM Goh.

2pm to 8pm - six hours non-stop with hot air blowing, I almost fainted.

Dinner was half an hour car ride away. I was famished.

Day 2 was fruit farm and spa.

I went home alone on second evening. I don't wish to skip any of my Japanese classes if possible.

A recharged me.

Sunset on my way home.

Memories of Japan Episode 6: Fukuoka > Osaka
Published: January 4, 2008
Japan continued... long awaited...

Day 6: 12 April 2007
Fukuoka
> Osaka

Completed Fukuoka, we were heading to Osaka. We woke up before the sunrise to catch a bullet train. The journey could normally take 5 minutes but with all our overweight luggages, we took about 30 to 45 minutes. I admit we
already filled up our luggages within 5 days. But can you feel for us? Dark, restless, heavy and freezing cold. So pathetic.

I have not reached the worst. Knowing that the time was short and we were going to be late (everyone knows Japanese are always on time), we ran. We thought we can make it, just in time. BUT BUT BUT... no drama okay, we witnessed with our own eyes; they shut the door of the bullet train in front of us. What to do!? We exchanged tickets for the next train.

The next train was an hour and half away.

We couldn't go anywhere with our luggages. Therefore, we had to fight the cold at the open-aired platform for the next train. Of course, we were sleepy and cold. The only two things we could do were buying hot drinks and took turns to go indoor. Out of so many unfortunate happenings, there bounded to be one fortunate thing. We reached the hotel almost 11am and supposingly, we couldn't check in or leave our luggages in the hotel as they are closed for cleaning up. After some "begging", the kind-heartened lady in-charge let us in.

Osaka Station.

Trying to kill time when we were heading to Osaka Castle.

Osaka Castle Park Station.

Japanese favorite - Baseball. Checking out for cute guys.

Osaka Castle Park.

After a tiring morning, we decided to go slow for the day. The only place we visited was Osaka Castle (大阪城). It is a Japanese castle originally called Ozakajo. It is one of Japan's most famous castles, and played a major role in the unification of Japan during the sixteenth century of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The castle is situated on a plot of
land roughly one kilometer square. It is built on two raised platforms of landfill supported by sheer walls of cut rock, each overlooking a moat. The central castle building is five stories on the outside and eight stories on the inside, and built atop a tall stone foundation to protect its occupants from sword-bearing attackers.

Entrance of the Castle.

Construction on Osaka Castle started in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple, which had been destroyed by Oda Nobunaga thirteen years earlier. Toyotomi Hideyoshi intended the castle to become the center of a new, unified Japan under Toyotomi rule. However, a few years after Hideyoshi's death, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed the castle and terminated the Toyotomi lineage in 1615. Osaka Castle was rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s, but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down. It was not until 1931 that the present ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle was built. Major repair works gave the castle new glamour in 1997.

Sheer walls of cut rocks.

It is a popular spot during festival seasons, and especially during the cherry blossom bloom, when the sprawling
castle grounds are covered with food vendors and taiko drummers. The grounds also house a museum, the large indoor arena Osaka-jo Hall, and the Toyokuni Shrine dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Some
tako-yaki?

No pictures in the castle. So only before we went in and the top view.

Osaka Stamps.

End of Day 6. Curry rice dinner. And sleep.

Brief Background Information of Osaka
Osaka has been a major port and mercantile centre from the beginning of Japan's recorded history. It was also briefly the first capital of Japan (before the establishment of a permanent capital at Nara). During its early days, Osaka was Japan's centre for trade with Korea and China, a role which it shares today with Kobe and Yokohama. In the late 16th century, Osaka rose to prominence when Toyotomi Hideyoshi, having unified all of Japan, chose Osaka as the site for his castle. Merchants set up around the castle and the city quickly grew into a busy economic centre. This
development was further encouraged by the Tokugawa shogunate, which adopted a hands-off approach to the city, allowing merchants to prosper unhindered by government interference.

Famous for its down-to-earth citizens and hearty cuisine, Osaka combines historical and cultural attractions with all the delights of a Japanese urban phenomenon. At night Osaka is live-wired with flashing neon, beckoning with promises
of tako-yaki (fried octopus ball), good times and lots of beer. Minami (south) is the city's entertainment district and contains the hyperactive shopping and nightlife areas of Namba and Shinsaibashi. In between is the peaceful green Nakanoshima Park, on a small island bounded by the Dojimagawa and Tosaborigawatwo rivers. Osaka-wan, the bay area in the west, is home to a number of attractions, including the spanking-new Universal Studios and the excellent Osaka Aquarium.
